In the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom, nestled within the Hemel-en-Aarde wine region, lies a hidden gem that has garnered the admiration of wine enthusiasts and travel tourism planners alike: Creation Winery. This scenic spot, a few hours' drive from Cape Town, offers more than just exceptional wine; it is a feast for the senses, blending natural beauty, artistic expression, and culinary delights into a singular, unforgettable experience.

Hemel-en-Aarde, translating from Afrikaans to "Heaven and Earth," aptly describes the region's breathtaking landscape. The valley's hills stretch toward the sky, creating a mesmerizing vista where heaven and earth seem to meet. Upon arriving at Creation Winery, we were immediately struck by the artistic vibe throughout the winery. Art is ever-present, from the meticulously crafted wines to the culinary masterpieces offered in the tasting room. They have long been renowned for their innovative wine and food pairing menus.
Creation isn’t just about wine; it’s also an artistic haven. I was mesmerized with how well the estate’s art and sculptures enhanced the sensory experience. The fusion of art and wine creates a multi-dimensional journey. This fusion of art and nature invites guests to explore and appreciate the creativity and innovation that defines Creation Winery.
A Name Reflecting Spirit and Innovation
The name "Creation" honors the vineyard's unique winegrowing conditions and the innovative spirit that defines the winery setting. The vines climb the steep slopes of Babylon Toren Mountain, reaching altitudes of 300 meters above sea level. Here, they benefit from abundant sunshine, fertile clay soils, and cooling breezes from the nearby Atlantic Ocean.
In 2002, JC and Carolyn Martin decided to establish a winery in a secluded part of Walker Bay. JC was born and raised in Switzerland and Carolyn in South Africa, both come from pioneering winemaking families with three generations of experience across two continents. Their goal was to transform 40 hectares of untouched land into a model wine farm. Creation faced numerous challenges, particularly in cultivating healthy, resilient vines on previously untested land.
The quality of their first harvest in 2006, especially the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, hinted at the promise and potential of this burgeoning winery. Winning recognition in their very first year, the stage was set for future success.
What Sets Creation Apart
In just two decades, Creation Winery has achieved remarkable success, recently securing a place among the Top 10 in the prestigious 'World’s Best Vineyards' list, as voted by 500 global wine experts. Not only did it earn the 10th spot, but it also emerged as the highest-ranked wine farm in Africa. This accolade underscores the winery’s commitment to excellence and innovation in both wine and placemaking.
Creation's wines are celebrated for their elegance, balance, and structure. They offer full flavors and rich aromas lifted by the optimal levels of acidity and tannins that create vibrant wines that are seamless and easy to drink. The winery’s approach to pairing wines with food is meticulous, with menus that take 2-3 months to plan, ensuring each pairing enhances the dining experience. While we didn’t have time for a full meal, the rave reviews from those who have indulged in Creation’s culinary offerings – including our daughters on a visit earlier this year – speak volumes about the quality and care that go into each dish.
