A Landscape of Heaven and Earth

Hemel-en-Aarde translates from Afrikaans as “Heaven and Earth.” Standing there, the name feels entirely appropriate.

The valley’s hills stretch toward the sky, creating a landscape where heaven and earth appear to meet. Creation sits within that scenery, surrounded by vineyards and the natural beauty of the Cape Floral Kingdom.

The vines climb the slopes of Babylon Toren Mountain, reaching approximately 300 meters above sea level. They receive abundant sunshine, grow in fertile clay soils, and benefit from cooling breezes from the nearby Atlantic Ocean.

Those conditions help explain why this part of South Africa has become associated with wines that combine flavor, structure, and freshness. They also help the visitor understand that the landscape is not simply a beautiful backdrop. It is part of what shapes the wine.

The Art of Wine and More

When we arrived at Creation, we were immediately struck by the artistic atmosphere throughout the winery.

Art was everywhere. We saw it in the sculptures, the surrounding landscape, the wines, and the culinary work coming from the tasting room. Creation had long been known for its innovative wine-and-food pairing menus, but the connection between art and wine extended beyond the table.

The estate’s sculptures added another dimension to the visit. They encouraged us to slow down, look more closely, and consider how visual art could shape the way we experienced the surrounding landscape.

That combination created a multidimensional journey. Wine, art, food, and nature did not feel like separate attractions assembled for visitors. They felt like different expressions of the same creative spirit.

How Creation Began

The name Creation reflects both the property’s distinctive winegrowing conditions and the innovative spirit behind the winery.

In 2002, JC and Carolyn Martin decided to establish a winery in a secluded part of Walker Bay. JC was born and raised in Switzerland, while Carolyn was born and raised in South Africa. Both came from pioneering winemaking families with three generations of experience across two continents.

Together, they set out to transform 40 hectares of untouched land into a working wine farm.

It was an ambitious undertaking. The land had not previously been tested as a vineyard, and establishing healthy, resilient vines brought significant challenges. They were not taking over a mature estate with generations of established vineyards. They were creating something new.

The quality of their first harvest in 2006, particularly the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, revealed the site’s promise. Recognition arrived in that first year, setting the stage for what Creation would become.

What Set Creation Apart During Our Visit

In fewer than two decades, Creation earned significant international recognition.

At the time of our reporting, the winery had secured the tenth position on the World’s Best Vineyards list. The ranking was determined by approximately 500 wine and travel experts. Creation was also the highest-ranked wine farm in Africa on that list.

That recognition reflected more than the quality of the wine. It recognized the complete experience Creation had built around place, hospitality, food, and wine.

The wines we encountered were elegant, balanced, and structured. They offered full flavors and rich aromas, supported by acidity and tannins that kept them vibrant and seamless.

The same level of attention extended to the food. Creation’s wine-and-food pairing menus could take two to three months to plan, with each element considered for how it would interact with the wine.

We did not have enough time for the full meal during our visit. Our daughters had visited earlier that year, however, and their enthusiastic account of the culinary experience gave us a clear sense of the care behind it.

Their response made us wish we had set aside more time.

More Than an Award-Winning Destination

Creation had received significant recognition, but the experience did not feel formal or distant.

Despite its premium offerings and international reputation, the winery maintained a down-to-earth atmosphere. The hospitality felt personal. The setting was beautiful, but it did not make visitors feel as though they had to stand back and admire it from a distance.

Instead, Creation invited people into the experience.

Guests could connect with the landscape, consider the art, taste the wine, and understand how food could reveal another side of what was in the glass. That combination gave the estate genuine charm and rustic appeal.

It made people feel at home.

Creation lives up to its name through creative thinking and a willingness to bring different forms of expression together.

The estate showed us how winemaking and culinary art could meet nature and human creativity without losing warmth or humility. The beauty was striking, but it was the harmony among the different elements that made the visit memorable.

Creation was more than a destination where we could taste South African wine. It was a place where the landscape, sculptures, food, wine, and people encouraged us to experience wine more fully.
