Langmeil Winery

Barossa Valley, South Australia. The Langmeil property was first settled in 1842 by settlers arriving by boat from Prussia, central Europe. One of their first line of action was to plant grapes for wine. Now the winery operating that same property is internationally recognized and regarded as one of the top premium wine producers in Australia. Driven by quality in every aspect, Langmeil Winery is a must visit either in person or virtually in our story to witness the people, the historic grounds, the ancestral vineyards and its astonishing history. And... experience the ultimate: a single vineyard wine from what is believed to be the oldest Shiraz vineyard in the world. Let this wine whisper you the history of over 180 years in rich layers of flavor, complexity and awe.

The Lindner family has been immersed in the Barossa's culture of farming, food, wine and community for six generations. In 1996 they acquired the neglected and dilapidated winery estate from a business that had gone in liquidation and they painstakingly refurbished the historic property naming it Langmeil after the original 1942 village. The Lindner brothers, Paul the Chief Winemaker and James in charge of Sales and Marketing, are now running the family operations. The brothers take a minimal approach in their wine making, the fruit is hand-picked and using open fermenters and basket presses. They do not fine their wines and use minimal filtration. Langmeil's winemaking skills are now internationally recognised. They are simply unique, making superb wine with a mindboggling, one-of-a-kind story.

Langmeil Winery and their oldest vineyards are located in the center of the wine-rich Barossa Valley in the township of Tanunda on the south bank of the North Para river. The soils are complex layers of dark sandy loam over clay filled with limestone and ironstone alternated with layers of red sand and patches of black cracking clay. These soils can provide refreshing minerality to the rich, full-bodied wines the Barossa is known for. The summers are hot and dry with good diurnal temperature changes, while the fall rapidly cools down allowing the fruit to fully ripen, creating expressive, well extracted red wines with jammy, earthy, spicy undernotes.

The Lindner family at Langmeil has an unmatched dedication to preserving the old vines. Discovering and reviving the oldest Shiraz vineyard in the world and honoring it with a dedicated, superb wine from this single 180 year old vineyard. Saving a 160 year old vineyard from a housing development by moving it one kilometer down the road one vine at the time. They view themselves as custodians of these ancestral vineyards. "Respecting the past by protecting its future. We are building on the shoulders of those before us to provide an opportunity for the future generations to come". In that same vein, the family has an unwavering commitment to the community, their growers and the Barossa Valley.
