Santa Julia is a Mendoza winery built around a simple idea: great wine should care for the land and the people who make it possible.

That purpose began in the early 1960s, when Alberto Zuccardi developed an innovative irrigation system to help bring vineyards to life in Mendoza’s dry landscape. He planted a vineyard in Maipú to demonstrate the system, but the grapes soon captured his attention. The project became Bodega Santa Julia, named after his granddaughter Julia Zuccardi.

The winery’s purpose has continued to evolve. Santa Julia was one of the first large-scale wineries in Argentina to move into organic production in the late 1990s. Today, the family is continuing that work through a facility dedicated to natural wine, while supporting its workers through daycare, education, community centers, and small business opportunities.

We spent a full day at Bodegas Santa Julia, meeting with Julia Zuccardi, agronomist Bernardo, winemaker Ruben Ruffo, and our host Nico Cuervo. It started back in the early 1960’s

The pioneering spirit goes back to Julia’s grandfather, Alberto Zuccardi, who developed an innovative irrigation system in Mendoza in the early 1960’s, which ended up revolutionizing the Mendoza’s wine industry. He planted a vineyard in Maipú, just east of the city Mendoza, to demonstrate the system. Soon, however, his passion shifted to the grapes he was growing and Bodega Santa Julia was born, named after his granddaughter Julia.

Pioneering is in their blood

Santa Julia was one of the first wineries to introduce restaurant hospitality at the winery. They were also the first to switch to organic wine production at large scale back in the late 1990’s and now evolving into natural wine production. To support this move, Santa Julia is building a new winemaking facility that is 100% dedicated to the production of natural wines.

Santa Julia’s move from organic farming toward natural wine raises a question many wine drinkers have: what is the difference between organic wine and natural wine?

The short version is that organic wine refers primarily to how the grapes are farmed and what inputs are permitted in the vineyard. Natural wine usually goes further into the cellar, with a focus on minimal intervention and fewer additions during fermentation and aging. The terms are related, but they are not interchangeable.

Santa Julia’s story is valuable because the winery is exploring both ideas at meaningful scale, while still making wines accessible to people who are simply looking for a good bottle for dinner.

Nurturing the land and caring for the people

“My grandparents were very focused on caring for the land and the people”, Julia explained to us. That spirit carries through to how the land is nurtured for and how the people working for Santa Julia are supported. Santa Julia provides community centers with daycare, opportunities for continuing education, and entrepreneurial businesses opportunities in crafts, sewing projects and gardening for the spouses of the workers.

We witnessed a family legacy blooming into a global example, where what is taken from the land is returned with love, and what is shared with people is returned with opportunity.

And then there is the wine. We tasted what I would describe as one of the best values we have encountered: Santa Julia Malbec Reserva, readily available around the world and priced below $10 when we first tasted it. It was flavorful, balanced, and satisfying without asking the drinker to know anything about wine. That is where Santa Julia’s purpose becomes especially tangible. Care for the land and care for the people are important, but so is creating a quality bottle that an everyday wine drinker can actually afford.
