Some of the most memorable Tuscan wines are not the bottles you plan to find.

We discovered Machetti Rosso Toscano on the table of our Airbnb in Ville di Corsano, a small village in the Tuscan countryside. Our hosts, the Machetti family, had left it for us as a welcome gift.

We opened the 2024 vintage with simple bruschetta, expecting a pleasant local wine. Instead, it stopped us in our tracks.

The Rosso Toscano was full of flavor, balanced, and persistent. We looked at each other and asked the obvious question:

Where did this come from?

The next day, we found out.

A Tuscan welcome on the table

We were staying at La Roverella Agriturismo, a restored property surrounded by vineyards and olive trees. Parts of the structure date back to the 1400s, and the setting immediately gave us the slower rhythm we had hoped to find in Tuscany.

The bottle on the table felt like part of that welcome. It was not presented with a tasting speech or a polished marketing story. It was simply there for us to open and enjoy.

That made the discovery feel personal. We were not searching for a famous label. We were drinking the wine our hosts chose to share.

And it was much better than we expected.

Meeting the Machetti family

Our curiosity led us to the Machetti family winery, just steps from the agriturismo.

The next day, the family welcomed us into their small operation. Machetti Wines is not built around scale or international attention. The family produces limited quantities of Rosso Toscano and extra virgin olive oil for friends, family, and the local community.

That small scale is part of the wine’s character. The family works with what the land gives them each year, so the wine can change depending on the season, weather, and harvest conditions.

There was no sense that the family was trying to make the wine into something it was not. They were making their wine, from their land, in the way that made sense to them.

That honesty stayed with us.

What is in the Rosso Toscano?

The vineyard photograph showed Graziano Machetti among vines where Sangiovese, Canaiolo, and Colorino grow intermixed.

The grapes are harvested together, de-stemmed, and fermented spontaneously in stainless steel before aging in a concrete vat. These details help explain why the wine felt so connected to the place: it was not built around a heavy style or layers of embellishment.

The 2024 vintage came together particularly well. It was balanced, expressive, and carried a lingering finish that made it difficult to put down.

The original price, six euros when we visited, was part of the surprise, but it was not the reason the wine mattered. The real value was discovering a bottle that expressed the generosity of the family and the quiet character of the village.

Prices and availability will change. The memory of finding it on that table is the part that lasts.

Why this Tuscan wine stayed with us

Machetti Rosso Toscano reminded us that Tuscany is not only about famous estates, celebrated appellations, or expensive bottles.

Sometimes the most meaningful wine is the one waiting in a kitchen or dining room when you arrive somewhere new.

We came to Ville di Corsano for the peace, the countryside, and the beauty of the agriturismo. We left with a bottle, a family story, and a better understanding of what local wine can mean.

It was a welcome gift, a table wine, and a small expression of place all at once.
